Acoustic Emission Inspection of Spherical Metallic Pressure Vessels

چکیده
Non destructive evaluation of metallic, spherical pressure vessels is crucial to the safety and operations of a plant due to the large volume of hazardous products stored at high pressures. Sizes of such spheres vary and diameters may range from 10 to 25 meters, even more, while total length of welds can be hundreds of meters. Additionally, accessibility for inspection is often limited, as is the case for insulated or buried spheres. The present paper discusses the use of Acoustic Emission (AE) as a non-destructive evaluation technique, offering in-service, testing of pressurized spheres inspecting the whole structure, including welds and base metal. The inspection is carried out during initial hydro-test for new spheres, regular requalification hydro-test, or online, during operation with the normal sphere contents, without removal from service. Assessment is performed in accordance with ASME or EN standards, and MONPAC or IPAC, Acoustic Emission evaluation procedures. The whole test is a matter of 2-4 days including set-up, and results include recommendations for next inspection and/or follow-up at selected areas of the sphere. The application of AE in various types of spheres, such as LPG, Ammonia is outlined while some representative examples are also provided.

Evaluation of Acoustic Emission Inspection of Oil Tank Floor via Tank Bottom Plates Thickness Measurement
This paper deals with an inspection of defects including corrosion and leakage by Acoustic Emission (AE) in an oil tank floor. In contrast to intrusive methods such as magnetic flux leakage, eddy current or ultrasonic, there is no need to emptying and entering the tank in AE method in order to inspection. In this research AE investigation and AE source location is presented in detail. The resul...

Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) Z 2342 was revised significantly in 2002. The original standard was enacted in 1991 with the title, "Method for acoustic emission testing of pressure vessels during pressure test". The title was also changed, based on NDIS2412 “Acoustic Emission Testing of Spherical Pressure Vessel Made of High Tensile Strength Steel and Classification of Test Results”, which ...
متن کاملStudy of the Frictional Surface Damage Using Acoustic Emission Method
In this study, the change at rubbing surfaces has been investigated experimentally using an acoustic emission signal monitoring system. A steel ring is slipped on the surface of a metallic sheet to simulate frictional conditions. The mechanical disturbances caused by the movement of the ring produce stress waves propagating along the sheet surface. The out of plane displacement of the sheet su...
متن کاملHeat Conduction in Spherical Composite Vessels
This paper presents an exact analytical solution for two-dimensional conductive heat transfer in spherical composite pressure vessels .The vessels are in spherical shape and fibers are winded in circumferential direction. The analytical solution is obtained under the general boundary conditions which consist of convection, conduction and radiation inside/outside of vessel. The heat transfer equ...
متن کاملExact Elasticity Solutions for Thick-Walled FG Spherical Pressure Vessels with Linearly and Exponentially Varying Properties
In this paper, exact closed-form solutions for displacement and stress components of thick-walled functionally graded (FG) spherical pressure vessels are presented. To this aim, linear variation of properties, as an important case of the known power-law function model is used to describe the FG material distribution in thickness direction. Unlike the pervious studies, the vessels can have arbit...
